As I watched an All in the Family episode where Archie is stranded in an elevator with two Puerto Ricans and a black man, I realized that Archie's complaints and stereotypes are the same as any buffoon who would rather be a member of the Tea Party than an actual American.
In the episode, Archie does not realize that the black man is rich and does not recognize the Puerto Ricans as Americans, to which the man replies, "Mr. Bunker, we are as American as you are!"
This caused me to think about the Tea Party.
Who are these buffoons in the Tea Party?
For starters, most of them were once called Nixon's silent majority-which is what Archie claimed to be.
They were the working class whites who hated to see their tax dollars go to welfare programs, even while they refused to educate or hire the same group of people they chose to complain about.
They hated blacks and refused to consider the idea that one could get rich in the world of business (which explains why he hated George Jefferson!). Even today, these very same white people seem to think that blacks can't make it in the business world.
I hope Russell Simmons doesn't find out about this!
While Archie considered poor people to be nothing more than babymakers and despised minorities in general, it is known that the Tea Party votes "pro-life," but chooses to cut programs which would prevent pregnancy in the first place. I guess they forgot to read that passage in 1 Corinthians which reads that a husband and wife are not supposed to withhold sex from one another-a passage which I have quoted many times.
I shook my head as I watched this episode, not because I was disgusted by it per se, but because, but because while the times have changed, these knuckdraggers haven't. Like Archie Bunker, they are still they are the same paranoid, under-educated, bigoted religious extremists who refuse to give the people they blame for America's problems an equal shot at the American prize-and they are willing to defund every social program to do it so that billionaires who ship American jobs overseas get a tax cut. The problem is that they don't see that-and Archie wouldn't have seen it, either.
Archie would have blamed a Hispanic for his job going to a Chinese factory-just like one who drinks the poisoned tea.
