When Harold Camping's rapturous prediction didn't come true last month, I initially sympathized with the guy because I figured him to be some rambling old codger who was just waiting to die. However, the more I read and heard about his church, I sadly realized that Camping was just another thief.
One of the examples I read was an article I read about how you can know when the Rapture would happen. I also read from others about how his people asked for money.
Call me a bastard, but I laughed hysterically upon the news of his stroke. Now, why would I do that?
There are some people in the world who have grown tired of those who are influenced by the ramblings of crazy people who claim God speaks to them. In addition, we are angered by the fact that some of these idiots have children and we think of how their respective decisions to sell all they owned affect these children-who have no say.
Keep in mind that the Bible tells children that they are to obey their parents without question and that the Old Testament gives circumstances under which parents are allowed to murder their children. I invite anyone who doesn't believe me to look at my other articles regarding this subject. You can also read Leviticus and Deuteronomy in the Old Testament.
Have you ever known a child who was subjected to this kind of nonsense? Were you a child who was raised in this kind of nonsense? If so, how did it affect you and what do you believe today?
As far as this writer is concerned, Harold Camping got what he deserved for destroying fortunes, destroying families and destroying individual lives, as well as bringing people to the point where they question their faith. Again, think of the children whose parents bought this shyster's snake oil. Think of what they had to endure upon their return to school and think about how Camping's words and actions affected their faith.
Ever read the second chapter of First Peter? Read it.
I'll tell you what really scares me about people who take anyone like Harold Camping seriously-they are allowed to vote and run for political office.
Think of how these people affect the education of children when they win school board elections.
Does it not frighten you when you realize that someone who follows a nut like Harold Camping could be writing a science textbook that a school district that is dominated by religious conservatives will vote to approve for use in a school district.
Think of the negative impact that would have on our ability to compete globally!
It is bad enough that we have people who don't believe in science occupying seats in school boards across this nation. What's worse is that these people could be sneaking their rapturous beliefs into the classroom, and we should fight that just as ferociously as some in this country choose to fight the installation of a particular teacher just because she happens to wear a hijab (and for those of you who think I would approve of that, think again, because a hijab is a form of religious expression. I oppose any form of religious expression in public!).
For the sake of the kids, doesn't someone hope that, someone some day can convince us one day that we need to edit our First Amendment? If that were to happen, we would no longer have to worry about a rapture that's never going to happen. We can just get to the business of making our kids the aces of the world again.
